Asien

Generally recordings of music from Asian countries like China and Japan are less well known here in Central Europe. Maybe their tonality is too strange for our Western ears after all. Nevertheless recordings from that part of the world repeatedly do make their way to Europe and thus to DIE TONABNEHMER.

Our Chinese section, for example, features recordings from the heyday of Chinese communism with records bearing titles like „Our Workers Follow the Party“ and „Songs for the Revolution“. But we also carry LPs by HongKong superstar Anita Mui (Mandarin: Mei Yan-Fang). Shortly after finishing first in a song contest, Anita achieved some fame. Changing her looks frequently she soon was called Madonna of HongKong, but was also known as Bad Girl  Mei Yan-Fang. Before long she also garnered recognition as an actress. Appearing in movies with Jackie Chan (Rumble in the Bronx and Drunken Master) she became known to a German audience as well. Unfortunately she passed away prematurely in 2003 aged 40. At DIE TONABNEHMER you are able to purchase her albums „Bad Girl“ and „Illusions“.

Some Japanese artists have gained international recognition on a somewhat larger scale. One outstanding example is Yoko Ono, who also proved her talent and artistry outside her relationship with John Lennon. A further example of achieving world-wide fame is Japanese composer, pianist and actor Ryuichi Sakamoto, known to a larger audience as the creator of  numerous movie scores (The Last Emperor, Little Buddha and The Revenant) and through collaborations with famous artists like Iggy Pop and David Byrne. In 2008 he was even called into the jury of the Berlin Film Festival – Berlinale. His LP „Left Handed Dream“ from 1981 can be found alongside recordings of lesser known artists in the Japan section of THE TONABNEHMER.

There are similar offering for music lovers interested in Korean and Indian recordings.
