Anfang der siebziger Jahre sieht man die Anfänge des Glam Rock hauptsächlich in Großbritannien. Sie begannen als eine Gegenbewegung zu dem sehr ernsthaften, fast spaßlos gewordenen Prog Rock von Gruppen wie Jethro Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd oder auch Gentle Giant und Genesis. Musik sollte wieder Spaß machen, freudige Rhythmen beinhalten und „schön bunt“ werden. Die Grenzen der Gesellschaft und des Musikbusiness sollten überschritten werden während Tabubrüche und Sorglosigkeit in den Vordergrund traten. Androgynes Auftreten, glitzernde Kleidung extravagantes Make-up und aufwändige Bühnenshows charakterisieren ihren Stil. Die Diskussion um Homosexualität, weniger stark definierte Geschlechterrollen und Cross-Dressing war in Großbritannien viel weiter fort geschritten als in den USA (wo man häufiger von Glitter Rock sprach), weswegen US-Amerikaner erst später einen Geschmack dafür entwickelten. Glam Rock blieb auch in den 80ern und frühen 90ern populär. In den späten 90ern und den frühen 2000ern folgten Gruppen des Post Glam.
Als Vorreiter des Glam Rock gilt im allgemeinen Mark Bolan, der als erster bei „Top of the Pops“ mit silber glitzernd geschminkten Wangen auftrat. Auch seine Gruppe T.Rex entwickelte sich in den frühen 70ern immer weiter von der ursprünglichen Hippie Band weg. Sie traten mit Make Up, in glitzernder Kleidung und androgynem Äußeren auf. Etwa zeitgleich entwickelte sich auch David Bowie weiter. Während er seine Anfänge als Saxophonist und Sänger verschiedener Blues Gruppen hatte, veröffentlichte er 1967 sein erstes Album mit dem Titel „David Bowie“, das weitestgehend unbeachtet blieb. Mit seiner Single „Space Oddity“ von 1969 war er allerdings recht erfolgreich. Auf seinem Album „The Man who Sold the World“ von 1970 wurde die Akkustik Gitarre durch eine Hardrock Gitarre ersetzt und wird deshalb häufig noch vor Black Sabbath als die Geburtsstunde des Heavy Metal bezeichnet. Allerdings erscheint Bowie auf dem Cover in Frauenkleidern auf einem Sofa liegend. Ein erster Schritt Richung Glam. Als dann das Album „The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars“ erschien, wurde es zu einem weltweiten Erfolg. Die dazugehörige, spektakuläre Bühnenshow, in der David Bowie rund um den Globus als Ziggy Stardust, dick geschminkt und in glitzernder Kleidung zusammen mit seiner Band The Spiders from Mars auftrat, etablierte ihn endgültig als Meister des Glam Rock.
Natürlich fanden auch andere Künstler Freude an dem Spiel mit Geschlechterrollen, bunten Kostümen, fröhlichen Beats und Make Up. Elton John, Kiss, Twisted Sister und wie oben schon erwähnt T. Rex sind einige der bekanntesten Beispiele der 70er Jahre. Suzy Quatro durchbrach die weibliche Geschlechterrolle, indem sie in burschikoser Lederkleidung und mit Kurzhaarschnitt auf die Bühne trat.
Während Roxy Music später anspruchsvolle und gesellschaftskritische Themen präsentierte, stellten Plattenfirmen, vom kommerziellen Erfolg der Glam Rocker angelockt, rein auf Gewinn ausgerichtete Gruppen wie Sweet zusammen, die mit einfachen Rhythmen auf ein ganz junges Publikum zielten. Auch für Gary Glitter standen eingehende Tanzrhythmen für ein junges Publikum im Vordergrund.
Die „New Romantics“ wie Culture Club und Adam & the Ants folgten in den in den 80ern. In den 90ern kamen noch Marilyn Manson und Chainsaw Kittens dazu.
Glam Rock wird oft als Wegbereiter für Punk und Gothic bezeichnet, da man sich auch dort, bei unterschiedlichem Musikstil, mit Grenzüberschreitungen und ausgefallenem Äußerem über Erwartungshaltungen hinwegsetze. Eine neue Blüte erlebte das Genre in den späten 90ern und frühen 2000ern durch glamouröse Auftritte von Bands wie The Ark, Darkness, Placebo und The Scissor Sisters.
Im Kino brachten Filme wie Rocky Horror Picture Show und Velvet Goldmine den Glam Rock einem noch größeren Publikum näher.

The term Rock Music as such covers a wide variety of styles. Oftentimes the distinguishing characteristics are fluid, not only within the own genre but also crossing over into other areas of music.
In the seventies the beginnings of Glam Rock could be observed mainly in Great Britain. They started out as a counter movement to the very rigid, serious musical style of prog rock groups like Jethro Tull, Yes, Pink Floyd or Gentle Giant and Genesis. Now, music was supposed to be fun again, contain enjoyable rhythms, and present itself in full technicolor. The norms of society and the music business were to be transcended, while enjoying carefree performances with few taboos. An androgynous appearance paired with ample make-up, flashy costumes and extravagant stage shows became their trademarks. British society had started discussing topics like homosexuality, gender roles and cross-dressing much more freely than their US counterparts, thus delaying the success of the genre in the USA. Glam Rock remained popular through the 80s and into the very early 90. It resurfaced in the shape of post-glam in the late 90s and early 2000s.
Mark Bolan is generally considered one of the pioneers of Glam Rock, appearing on TV in „Top of the Pops“, sporting silver glitter make-up on his cheeks. His group T.Rex followed in his footsteps moving away from their image as a hippie band. They performed in make-up, shiny costumes and androgynous demeanor. At the same time David Bowie moved away from his origins as a saxophone player and singer for various blues bands. His first album „David Bowie“ from 1967 remained largely unnoticed, His 1969 single „Space Oddity“, however, garnered considerable success. His album „The Man who Sold the World“, published in 1970 replaced the acoustic guitar with a hard-rock version. Oftentimes this fact is quoted as the birth of Heavy Metal, even ahead of Black Sabbath. On the cover of the album Bowie is stretched out on a sofa in women’s clothing. A first step towards glam. Once the album “ The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars“ it became a world-wide success.The corresponding world-tour boasting a spectacular stage show with Bowie as Ziggy Stardust in heavy make-up and shimmering costumes and his band The Spiders from Mars, cemented Glam Rock as an important part of music history.
Naturally other artists also found joy in transcending gender roles, presenting themselves in make-up and flashy dress, sporting somewhat outrageous behaviour. Elton John, Kiss, Twisted Sister and the above mentioned T.Rex are only some examples from the 70s, Suzi Quatro went beyond the roles defined for a female performer by appearing in butch black leather outfits with short hair and a tomboy demeanor.
While later on Roxy Music used more sophistiated and current themes in their lyrics, record companies, lured by the success of Glam Rock performers, created groups like Sweet strictly fashioned to appeal to very young audiences with simple rhythms, for the purpose of creating revenue. Gary Glitter similarly used straightforward dance beats to attract young fans.
The „New Romantics“ like Culture Club and Adam & the Ants followed in the 80s while Marilyn Manson and Chainsaw Kittens covered late 80s to early 90s.
Oftentimes Glam-Rock is considered a trailblazer for Punk and Gothic. While musically diverse, they all attempt to transcend societal norms and transform the exterior, defying strict roles. The glamorous shows of bands like The Ark, Darkness, Placebo and Scissor Sisters lead a revival in the 2000s. To this days elements of Glam Rock like make-up and extravagant dress are an integral part of many performances in the rock arena.
Movies like The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Velvet Goldmine made Glam-Rock known to an even larger audience.
